How do LED Grow Lights Work?

Why can LED plant grow lights help plants grow?

Light as a kind of energy, plants provide material and energy for their own growth and development through photosynthesis, which affects the formation of assimilation force, stomatal opening, enzyme activation, etc. in the process of photosynthesis. Light as an external signal affects many aspects of plant growth and development such as groundward and rightward, gene expression, and seed germination, so light is crucial to plant growth.

Effect of spectral range on plant growth

The color temperature and lumens of plant lights are seen from the human eye, while the photosynthesis of light by plants is not dependent on color temperature and lumens. The plant’s perception of light lies in the spectrum. Plants bathed in sunlight are not interested in all of the solar spectrum. The main influence on plants is visible light with wavelengths between 400 and 700 nm, a region of the spectrum often referred to as the effective energy region for photosynthesis.

280 ~ 315nm: minimal effect on morphological and physiological processes

315 ~ 400nm: little chlorophyll absorption, affecting the photoperiodic effect and preventing stem elongation

400 ~ 520nm (blue): the largest ratio of chlorophyll to carotenoid absorption, and the greatest impact on photosynthesis

520 ~ 610nm (green): the absorption of pigments is not high

610 ~ 720nm (red): low absorption of chlorophyll, significant effect on photosynthesis, and photoperiodic effect

720 ~ 1000nm: low absorption rate, stimulates cell lengthening and affects flowering and seed germination

>1000nm: converted into heat
